When we approached the pastor about acquiring the land, we were honored to hear her reply: “We’ve been waiting on you to call.” She continued to tell us that she wanted to sell the property to someone with deep ties to the community.
This long slender home has a Caribbean flair with offbeat architectural elements and little details that hint at its spiritual past. We worked with a Cabbagetown glass artist, Susan McCracken, to add stained glass transom above the double front door in sweet scripted font. The slender porch columns, structurally expressive brackets and raw angled struts give a composed feel to the front facade.
Another interesting detail is the powder room sink, embedded with fragments of stained glass, school kids’ marbles and various other relics salvaged from the demolition.
You might not be able to see any remains from the street, but we constructed 100 Chester with a whole lot of respect for what came before.
